Statement of Need

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe and generally chronic disorder that presents patients and their families and researchers with multiple challenges. These complex challenges will be addressed in order to inform mental health professionals, families, and consumers of the most current diagnostic and treatment options available.

Description

This conference is specifically designed to offer those persons whose lives are impacted by borderline personality disorder (BPD), professionals, relatives, and consumers, a forum to better understand this complex disorder from various perspectives.

An internationally-recognized faculty, family members, consumers, and advocates will present up-to-date information on key issues pertaining to many aspects of the disorder: diagnosis, medical issues, personal and social impact, new research, self-injury and suicide, longitudinal perspectives and current research, medications, consumer/family perspectives, and treatments.

Objectives

The objectives of this CME program are to improve patient care and to advance the understanding of professionals, families, and consumers about the complexities of the disorder. At the conclusion of the conference, conference attendees will be better able to identify, specify, and describe:

1. The complexities of the diagnostic issues surrounding BPD.
2. Medical issues related to BPD.
3. Risk factors for self-injury and suicide.
4. Medication options.
5. Family and consumer perspectives, and role of family relationships.
6. Research-based family education and support.
7. Past, current, and future direction in research on BPD.
