Family Perspectives on Borderline Personality Disorder and Co-occurring Disorders

Conference Sponsors: This CME program is jointly sponsored by Weill Medical College of Cornell University and the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder.
Audience: The conference is for mental health professionals (physicians, psychologists, social workers, registered nurses), family members, and consumers.
Statement of Need: Borderline Personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and generally chronic disorder that presents patients and their families with multiple challenges. These complex challenges will be addressed in order to inform mental health professionals, families and consumer of the most current diagnostic and treatment options available.
Objectives: The objective of this CME program is to improve patient care. At the conclusion attendees will be better able to:
1) Describe medical issues pertaining to BPD
2) Specify co-occurring disorders such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, eating disorders, and substance abuse
3) Delineate treatment options for BPD and co-occurring disorders
4) Identify risk factors for suicidal behavior
5) Specify BPD medication options
6) Better understand family and consumer perspectives
Program Description: The conference is designed to provide a forum for mental health professionals, family members, and consumers to better understand the complexities of borderline personality disorder and co-occurring disorders.
An internationally recognized faculty will present current information and research pertaining to the many aspects of the disorder. A panel of family members and consumers will share perspectives, viewpoints, and experiences of coping with BPD. Interactive breakout sessions and seminars will cover topics such as treatment options, adolescents, diagnostic issues, commonly asked questions, treatment refusal, advocacy, and support.
